The Industrial Challenge

Figeac-Aero is involved in nearly every ongoing civil aeronautical program and has grown continuously since 1989 through a strategy built on performance and investment in industrial machinery. Its 3D control team, led by Frédéric Moncet, inspects large frame parts — wing spars up to 14 meters long, reverse thruster frames and beams — for leading aircraft and engine manufacturers.

Clients require increasingly complex parts, with tighter tolerances, at the best price, delivered on time — and inspected faster, without compromising accuracy.

To meet these demands, Figeac-Aero invested in one of the largest coordinate measuring machines in Europe — a project representing almost four years of investment and technical studies. Seamless interfacing with Metrolog and Silma required a last-generation CN, made possible through close collaboration between Figeac-Aero, Hexagon, and Metrologic DCS engineers, who joined the integration in Turin to verify the setup on-site.

Surface and geometric measurement engine

Metrolog computes measured surfaces against CAD definitions with a powerful surface and geometric measurement engine. Automatic tool-change management keeps the CMM running autonomously for 8+ hours at a time, while an intuitive, menu-driven interface lets programmers work independently from the technical office.

Offline programming and digital twin

Silma virtually recreates the full measurement environment — machine, head, probes, and fixtures — enabling complete offline programming with a digital twin and built-in collision avoidance. This reduces machine time and lets the CMM switch between parts fully autonomously in hidden time.

One of the largest coordinate measuring machines in Europe, interfaced with Metrolog and Silma through a last-generation CN. The CMM automatically manages tool changes between touch and continuous probing, reaching a 98% utilization rate.

For the inspection of 3D parts of medium and large sizes, including frame parts in particular, our need was oriented towards a very powerful software in surface and geometric measurement. Given the numerous comparisons we make between the real part and the CAD, Metrolog is among the best, if not the best, in the market.

Frédéric Moncet has led the 3D control team at Figeac-Aero for 19 years. In addition to managing programmers and quality controllers, he oversees 3D control project management — CMM, sensors, measurement software — and recently led the integration of one of the largest CMMs in Europe.
