Safran Landing Systems, located in Mirabel (Canada), manufactures landing gear boxes for medium and large commercial aircraft. These parts present exceptional inspection challenges: large dimensions, significant distortions from hardening, and deep cylinders with complex orientations make measurement with conventional indexable heads extremely difficult.
Each part carries a high number of tolerances to be verified, generating considerable measurement volumes and long cycle times on the CMMs in use. As the teams transitioned one of their machining processes to 5-axis strategies, they identified a parallel opportunity in inspection: adopting a REVO 5-axis scanning head from Renishaw.
Reduce inspection cycle times by 50% while maintaining Safran’s high quality standards — without compromising repeatability on complex geometries.
Metrolog is one of the only software solutions capable of natively integrating all REVO sensors. Its powerful programming engine handles the most complex 5-axis trajectories through graphical wizards, making it the go-to platform for harnessing the full potential of the REVO head.
The REVO 5-axis scanning head minimizes CMM motion and associated dynamic errors, enabling high-speed 5-axis measurement with no loss of accuracy. It is particularly effective on parts with deep cylinders and complex orientations — precisely the characteristics of Safran’s landing gear boxes.
Inspection cycle times on the CMM were reduced by 50%, directly meeting the target Safran Landing Systems set at the outset of the project.
The migration of the entire part portfolio to REVO 5-axis technology has been completed, consolidating the gains across all production.
The number of set-ups and interventions required from CMM operators was significantly reduced, freeing up capacity on the production floor.
Assessment and clearance of parts for subsequent production stages is faster, and the Material Review Board receives non-conformity information more rapidly.
Programming and analysis times dropped significantly, leading to optimisation of operational, support and programming staff resources.
