Manufacturing Quality Pack Decomposition Analyzer

Decomposition Analyzer

Understand every deviation — not just its magnitude.

Decomposition Analyzer breaks down any measured deviation into form, size, orientation, and position components — in one click, in 3D, directly on your part geometry. Based on ISO 20170.

When a part fails inspection, you know the deviation. You don't know what caused it.

The global value doesn’t tell you.

And without knowing which component dominates, every corrective action is a guess — you might spend a week adjusting fixturing when the real issue is a sizing parameter.

The result: non-conformance reports that describe the deviation without explaining it. Root-cause meetings that run in circles. And the same parts coming back out of tolerance.

Decomposition Analyzer — Metrolog CMM Software — Metrologic DCS

Animation illustrating the Decomposition Analyzer module in Metrolog. A blue dashed wave reveals form deviation with a magnifying glass and a breakdown cartouche showing Form as the dominant contributor. Then an orange dashed rectangle highlights the slot feature with a second magnifying glass, and the breakdown cartouche shows Orientation and Position as the dominant contributors. Form Size Orient. Position Form Size Orient. Position
Metrolog Decomposition Analyzer isolates geometric deviation contributors — Form, Size, Orientation, and Position — and displays their relative weight as a breakdown cartouche during CMM inspection. Part of the Metrologic DCS manufacturing quality software suite.
Understand

One click.
Four components. The full picture.

Decomposition Analyzer applies ISO 20170 directly on your Metrolog inspection result. It separates the contribution of form, size, orientation, and position — and displays them in 3D on your part geometry.

You see immediately which component dominates. And you know exactly where to act — before writing a single corrective action.

You know which component fails.

Instant root-cause clarity

You see which component dominates in one click — form, size, orientation, or position. No manual calculation.

ISO 20170 compliant

Analysis follows the international standard for geometric deviation decomposition. Audit-ready and process-aligned.

In-context 3D visualization

Results displayed directly on the part geometry inside Metrolog. No separate report to cross-reference.

Faster corrective action

You know what type of deviation you're dealing with before the root-cause meeting even starts.

Watch how a quality engineer goes from a Metrolog inspection result to a complete form/size/orientation/position breakdown — without leaving the software.

Three steps inside Metrolog. One result that explains everything.

1

Select your feature in Metrolog and open Decomposition Analyzer

From your Metrolog inspection session, select the feature you want to analyse. Launch Decomposition Analyzer directly — it reads the inspection result and loads your part geometry automatically. No file export, no additional setup.

2

Choose your evaluation criterion and run the decomposition

Select the evaluation criterion (Tchebychev or Least Squares) in the Modify Decomposition dialog. The four ISO 20170 component types — form, size, orientation, position — are computed instantly from your measured data and displayed on the 3D geometry.

3

Read the breakdown — and act on the right cause

The DECOMP1 results panel shows the actual value and proportion of each component. The dominant contributor is immediately visible. You know whether you’re facing a form issue (tool), a size problem (cutting parameters), an orientation drift (fixturing), or a position shift (setup) — before writing any corrective action.

Built for the teams who diagnose non-conformances and fix the process.

Quality Engineer

You write corrective action reports. Decomposition Analyzer gives you the breakdown you need to identify and document the root cause — not just the measured value. Non-conformances that actually explain what went wrong, with data to back it up.

Process / Methods Engineer

You need to know which process parameter drifted. Decomposition Analyzer tells you immediately: form error points to the tool, orientation drift to fixturing, position shift to setup, size error to cutting parameters. Direct action, no meeting required.

Stop diagnosing by instinct. Start with the data.

Decomposition Analyzer is one piece of the loop.

The Manufacturing Quality Pack connects three capabilities into one continuous workflow. Each works standalone — and works better together.

ANTICIPATE

Deformation Simulator

Validate your tolerance strategy before the first chip is cut. Apply realistic geometric defects on your CAD model and run GD&T inspection virtually.

CORRECT

Machining Corrector

Transform measured deviations into CNC corrections automatically. Predictive Mode shows how the next part will measure before you run it. No trial-and-error.

Powered by Metrolog

Already part of your Metrolog environment.

Decomposition Analyzer runs inside Metrolog — it reads your inspection results directly, uses your existing part geometry and datum framework, and outputs results in the same 3D environment you already work in. No file export, no translation, no new tool to learn.

Available as a bundle licence within the Manufacturing Quality Pack. If you already use Metrolog, your upgrade path is shorter than you think.
