Based in Switzerland, Bvlgari’s watchmaking division combines the brand’s bold aesthetic with Swiss watchmaking expertise. Renowned for its ultra-thin models, including the iconic Octo Finissimo, the manufacture oversees the entire process, from movement to final assembly.
At the heart of this demanding process, the quality department must guarantee the conformity of parts that are often complex in shape, produced at high speed and toleranced to thousandths of a millimetre.
This is the environment in which Mathias Kaufmann, quality technician in charge of automated control, works, with a mission to make controls more reliable while helping operators become more autonomous.
Before the current solution, checks were carried out mainly manually, using Excel spreadsheets and traditional tools such as callipers. “There were significant differences in measurements between operators, instruments were not always calibrated, and traceability was virtually non-existent,” recalls Mathias Kaufmann. On complex parts such as the Serpenti case, with its 5-axis machining, the team had no reliable means of control, making the need for an automated, reproducible inspection tool obvious.
Metrolog gave the Scanflash machine the ease-of-programming it lacked, letting Bvlgari’s quality team fully exploit its dynamic scanning performance and push the machine’s limits.
Offline programming via Silma lets the quality team build new inspection programmes while the machine keeps running in production — a digital twin approach that saves considerable time without ever interrupting operators.
Designed for the production floor, the ESPI Scanflash TC three-dimensional measuring machine combines speed and accuracy, enabling high-precision in-process checks several times a day.
Automated 3D scanning with Metrolog replaced slow manual programming, cutting inspection cycle times sixfold.
The Scanflash + Metrolog solution now covers the vast majority of Bvlgari's case production checks.
Offline programming with Silma lets the quality team prepare new inspection routines without ever stopping the machine.
Beyond production control, the solution now also supports incoming inspection and rapid prototype testing.
Standardised, automated measurement has replaced manual callipers and spreadsheets, improving traceability and reducing non-conformities.
