Stellantis’ metrology laboratory in Carrières-sous-Poissy is accredited to A109000, the group’s reference standard for metrology laboratories, based on ISO 17025. For over 30 years, the lab has supported the design of automotive mechanical components — combustion and electric powertrains, transmissions, chassis and mechanical parts — each requiring its own dedicated measurement program. The site operates four CMMs: DEA, Wenzel, and two Leitz machines.
The two Leitz CMMs, in service for 35 years, still deliver valuable fixed-head scanning accuracy and rotary table integration. Their original software, however, was complex, kept technicians from working independently, and no longer complied with the ISO GPS standard. Stellantis considered three paths: invest in new CMMs, retrain teams on the existing software, or replace the software with a modern, universal retrofit solution.
Replacing the CMMs’ original software, Metrolog brought the two Leitz machines back to full performance with an intuitive interface and easier programming — without compromising measurement accuracy.
Fixed-head scanning accuracy and rotary table integration make these two Leitz machines valuable long-term lab assets, now paired with modern, standards-compliant software.
DEA, Wenzel and both Leitz CMMs now run on Metrolog, cutting the need for machine-specific training and making the team fully versatile.
The retrofit brought the Leitz CMMs' measurement software up to the latest ISO GPS standard, ensuring consistent interpretation of geometric tolerances.
By retrofitting existing hardware instead of buying new machines, Stellantis avoided the costs of acquisition, installation and technician training.
The two Leitz machines remain valuable lab assets, their fixed-head scanning accuracy and rotary table capability now matched by modern, supported software.
Easier programming and a more intuitive interface let technicians operate the retrofitted CMMs independently, with peer support reinforcing knowledge transfer.

Because the lab’s two other CMMs were already running Metrolog, extending it to the Leitz machines meant the whole team could rely on one interface for every measurement job. «All our technicians have mastered Metrolog, which simplifies the use of these machines and lets us take full advantage of their capabilities,» says Jose Fernandez, 3D Support Technician.

Stellantis is now planning to centralize its roughness and gear measurement functions on a single machine and software package. Renishaw’s REVO 5-axis measuring head is a natural complement to Metrolog, and the next step for the team is to take advantage of this universality to explore further 5-axis measurement capabilities and boost performance across the lab.

With industrial activities in over 30 countries and customers in more than 130 markets, Stellantis brings together 14 automotive brands and 2 mobility brands. The Carrieres-sous-Poissy technical center, on the right bank of the Seine opposite the Poissy plant and Expertise Center, is one of three Stellantis sites in the Yvelines region of France.
